Town Prepares for Potentially Severe Weather

Update 9:53 p.m.

The town seems to have escaped the worst of severe weather that spawned some tornados in New York and violent storms in Southern Connecticut. Some thunder and lightning was evident in town as seen by the attached photos courtesy of the Cleaves family.

Earlier Story

The National Weather Service has forecasted severe thunderstorms for the region that could produce damaging winds, hail and even tornadoes for Thursday in the state.

Adam B. Libros, the town’s fire marshal and director of emergency management said he is monitoring the situation closely.

“Residents should keep an eye on the sky and think about delaying outdoor activities late this afternoon through tonight,” Libros said. “As the National Weather Service stated, this could be a significant severe weather outbreak and a possible life threatening situation. Damaging winds, large hail and tornadoes are possible.”

He also said residents can monitor changes through the weather service’s web site at www.weather.gov.

The service has now issued a flash flood warning, severe thunderstorm watch and hazardous weather outlook for Canton and a tornado watch in nearby Litchfield Country. The most severe weather is expected between 7:45 and 8:30 p.m.

At least one activity in Canton has been affected as the weekly Parks and Recreation concert with Lucy Kaplansky has been moved to the Town Hall auditorium for 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Here is the forecast:

Showers and thunderstorms likely. Some storms could be severe, with large hail, damaging winds, and heavy rain. Patchy fog after 10 p.m. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. South wind 3 to 6 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.
