May 2011 Tornadoes proved deadly too. For the year 2011, huge tornadoes have been ripping through the months causing havoc, mass destruction, injury and death.

May 2011 Tornadoes Second Deadliest Month

The first 3 weeks May 2011 Tornadoes were not too bad. However, that all changed on May 21, 2011 and lasted until May 26, 2011! The worst and deadliest tornado during this time ocurred in Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011. It was classified as an EF-5 Tornado.

The Joplin, Missouri Tornado killed 141 people and injured 900. It is recorded as the deadliest tornado in the US since April 9, 1947 (Woodward Oklahoma Tornado killed 181). Massive destruction tore apart large parts of the city of Joplin.

Are the May 2011 Tornadoes The End of the Tornado Season?

 

Many people sigh relief when the month of May is over and they live in Tornado Alley in the US. Supposedly, May is the worst month for tornadoes.

However, tornadoes can occur in ANY month. Take, for instance, the New Years Tornado experienced 12/31/10 – 1/1/11!

Turning a closet into a safe room may not be as difficult as you think. There are certain requirements, yet concrete block, steel, cement, a secure heavy duty door and locks, and securing it to your foundation, seem to be a good start.
