Home safety checks planned for Georgetown and Ridge Farm – Champaign/Urbana News

RIDGE FARM — Faith in Action South is partnering with Ridge Farm firefighters and Georgetown emergency medical technicians to provide free home safety checks to seniors.

The checks will be conducted from 9 a.m. to noon July 14.

The checks are by appointment only.

To schedule a check, call Faith in Action South at 267-2752 by July 9.

During the checks, local emergency personnel will visit with seniors, age 60 and older, in their home in a friendly, non-emergency situation.

Using a standardized checklist, firefighters and EMTs will ensure the homes are hazard-free by checking smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, changing batteries and light bulbs, and installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors as needed. They also will check for fall prevention and other safety issues.

“The firefighters and I are looking forward to helping make seniors’ homes safer, and I welcome anyone with questions to call me,” said John Goodwin, Ridge Farm’s fire chief.

This is the 12th year that Faith in Action South has conducted the checks in southern Vermilion County. Faith in Action South is an outreach ministry of Provena United Samaritans Medical Center Foundation.
